Trauma is not only about one terrible event. It can come from a single experience, like an accident or assault, or from things that happened over and over, such as growing up with abuse or neglect, living with violence at home, or years of working in high-stress, dangerous jobs. Not everyone who goes through trauma develops a diagnosable condition, but its effects can quietly shape how a person feels, reacts and copes for a long time.

Atlanta Outpatient Rehab by The Recovery Village provides trauma-informed outpatient mental health and addiction care at 325 Hammond Drive, Suite 103, in Sandy Springs. If past experiences are still affecting your life, or you have noticed yourself drinking or using to get through the day, call (855) 917-2011 to talk confidentially about options.

Understanding Trauma

After a traumatic experience, the brain and body can stay on high alert as if the danger has not passed. Research summarized by the National Institute of Mental Health shows that many people recover from these reactions with time and support, while some go on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder or other conditions like depression and anxiety. Common effects of unresolved trauma include:

  • Feeling constantly tense, jumpy or unable to relax
  • Trouble sleeping, nightmares or intrusive memories
  • Emotional numbness, or feeling cut off from friends and family
  • Difficulty trusting others or setting boundaries
  • Shame, guilt or a sense that you are to blame for what happened
  • Physical complaints such as headaches, stomach problems or chronic tension

These are understandable responses to overwhelming experiences, not personal failings. A clinical assessment can help clarify what you are dealing with and what kind of support will help most.

The Connection Between Trauma and Addiction

Substances can seem to offer relief from memories, anxiety or numbness, which is one reason trauma and addiction so often occur together. Over time, though, alcohol and drugs can intensify the very feelings they were meant to quiet and make it harder to heal. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration promotes a trauma-informed approach in behavioral health care, which recognizes how common trauma is and aims to avoid re-traumatizing people during treatment.

In our program, trauma and substance use are addressed in the same treatment plan, by a team that understands how each influences the other.

Evidence-Based Treatment for Trauma

Trauma-informed care means you are treated with respect, given choices, and supported in building a sense of safety before working on painful material. Within that framework, our therapists use approaches supported by research, and your plan may include:

  • Individual therapy using trauma-focused and cognitive behavioral techniques
  • Skills groups based on DBT and ACT for grounding, managing strong emotions and improving sleep
  • Process groups where people share experiences in a structured, supportive setting
  • Motivational interviewing and relapse-prevention work if substances are involved
  • Family education, when appropriate, to strengthen support at home

If you already see a physician or psychiatric provider for medication, let us know so your care can stay coordinated.

Trauma Treatment in Sandy Springs

Our intensive outpatient program offers at least nine hours of care per week in morning and evening tracks, typically for about 12 weeks. It is designed for adults who want meaningful support while continuing to work in areas like Perimeter Center, Buckhead or Midtown, or caring for family in Dunwoody, Roswell and Alpharetta. We are on Hammond Drive near GA-400 and I-285; MARTA’s Red Line serves the Perimeter area, and transportation is not provided.

If trauma symptoms or substance use are severe enough that staying at home does not feel safe, a more intensive setting may be the right place to start. If you need residential mental health care or medical detox first, our sister facility The Recovery Village Atlanta in Roswell provides those services, and you can continue with outpatient care in Sandy Springs afterward.
