Prescription medications help millions of people manage pain, anxiety, sleep problems and attention disorders. Because they come from a pharmacy with a doctor’s name on the label, it can be hard to recognize when use has shifted from treatment to dependence. Many of the people we see never expected to need help with something they were prescribed, and many are working professionals who have kept their struggles private for a long time.

Atlanta Outpatient Rehab by The Recovery Village offers outpatient care for prescription drug misuse at 325 Hammond Drive, Suite 103, in Sandy Springs. Our program is built for adults who can safely live at home and want focused, confidential treatment that fits around work and family. To ask a question or check availability, call (855) 917-2011.

Understanding Prescription Drug Addiction

The National Institute on Drug Abuse groups the most commonly misused prescription drugs into three categories:

  • Opioid pain relievers such as oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine
  • Central nervous system depressants, including benzodiazepines like alprazolam and clonazepam, and sleep medications
  • Stimulants prescribed for ADHD, such as amphetamine salts and methylphenidate

Misuse can mean taking a higher dose or more often than prescribed, using someone else’s medication, or taking it for the feeling it produces rather than the symptom it treats. Signs that it may have become a disorder include running out early, visiting more than one prescriber, feeling unable to cope without the medication, and continuing despite problems at work or home.

Dependence can develop even when a person follows directions, particularly with long-term use of opioids or benzodiazepines. Physical dependence on its own is not the same as addiction, but it can make stopping difficult and is a good reason to involve a clinician. What matters most is an honest look at how the medication is affecting your life, which is exactly what an assessment with our team is designed to do.

Please do not stop certain medications suddenly on your own. Withdrawal from benzodiazepines and other sedatives can cause seizures and other serious complications, and should be managed by a medical professional. If someone is hard to wake or breathing slowly, call 911. For emotional crisis or thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.

Treatment Approaches for Prescription Drug Addiction

Effective treatment addresses both the medication and the reason it became so important. Following principles from SAMHSA and NIDA, our clinicians use:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy to find healthier ways to manage the pain, worry, insomnia or pressure that the medication was covering
  • Motivational interviewing to clarify what you want from recovery
  • Skills-based groups for stress tolerance, sleep habits and relapse prevention
  • Treatment for co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression or trauma, which often drive sedative or stimulant misuse
  • Family sessions, when appropriate, to rebuild trust and communication

If you still need medication for a legitimate condition, we encourage open communication with your prescriber so that your treatment plan and your medical care work in the same direction.

Our Outpatient Treatment Programs

Our intensive outpatient program provides a minimum of nine hours of treatment each week, including individual therapy, group sessions and medical appointments. The typical length is around 12 weeks, adjusted to your progress. With morning and evening tracks, clients can keep a job at a Perimeter Center or Buckhead office, finish a school pickup in Dunwoody, or keep up with commitments in Roswell and Alpharetta.

Some people need medical supervision before outpatient care is safe, especially those tapering off benzodiazepines or using several substances. If you need medical detox or residential care first, our sister facility The Recovery Village Atlanta in Roswell provides those services, and you can transition to our Sandy Springs IOP when you are ready.
