Methamphetamine can take hold quickly. Many people first use it to stay awake through long shifts, to lose weight, to keep up socially or to push through exhaustion, and within months find that sleep, appetite, mood and judgment all revolve around the drug. If that sounds familiar, you are not alone, and there is a clear path to getting help that does not require putting your whole life on hold.
Atlanta Outpatient Rehab by The Recovery Village provides outpatient treatment for stimulant use and other substance use disorders from our office at 325 Hammond Drive, Suite 103, in Sandy Springs. We work with adults from across north Atlanta who can safely live at home while attending a structured program several days a week. Call (855) 917-2011 to talk confidentially about whether this is the right place to start.
Understanding Methamphetamine Addiction
Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that floods the brain with dopamine, producing intense energy, focus and euphoria followed by a hard crash. Over time the brain’s reward system adjusts, so ordinary pleasures feel flat and cravings become strong. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, long-term use can affect memory, emotional regulation and physical health, though many changes improve with sustained recovery.

- Going days with little sleep, followed by long periods of exhaustion
- Rapid weight loss, dental problems or skin sores from picking
- Agitation, paranoia, or seeing and hearing things that are not there
- Intense cravings, and irritability or low mood when not using
- Pulling away from family, falling behind at work or taking risks that are out of character
The illicit supply is unpredictable, and stimulants are increasingly found mixed with fentanyl. If someone is unresponsive or breathing slowly, call 911. Severe paranoia, chest pain, overheating or seizures also need emergency care. If you are having thoughts of suicide, which can surface during a stimulant crash, call or text 988 at any hour.
Treatment Approaches for Methamphetamine Addiction
There is currently no FDA-approved medication specifically for methamphetamine use disorder, which makes behavioral therapy the foundation of care. Treatment guidance from SAMHSA and NIDA emphasizes structured, consistent counseling. In our program, that means:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to map out triggers such as stress, certain people or late nights, and to rehearse what to do instead
- Motivational interviewing to work through mixed feelings about quitting at your own pace
- Skills groups built on DBT and ACT ideas for managing cravings, boredom and intense emotions
- Individual therapy for the problems underneath use, such as trauma, depression or relationship strain
- Family education, when appropriate, so relatives understand the early recovery period
Early recovery from stimulants often brings fatigue, low mood and poor concentration for several weeks. Knowing that ahead of time, and having a therapist to talk with while it passes, can make it much easier to stay the course.
Our Outpatient Treatment Programs
Our intensive outpatient program provides at least nine hours of care per week through individual sessions, group therapy and medical appointments, with morning and evening tracks. Many clients finish in about 12 weeks. That schedule is designed for people who need real structure but also have jobs in Perimeter Center, Buckhead or downtown, classes, or children at home in Dunwoody or Roswell.
Outpatient care is not the right first step for everyone. If you are medically unstable, experiencing psychosis, or unable to stop using between sessions, a higher level of care may be safer. If you need medical detox or residential care first, our sister facility The Recovery Village Atlanta in Roswell offers those services, and you can continue with outpatient treatment in Sandy Springs once you are ready.
